KDU Education Group Launches KDU MY Challenge

Petaling Jaya, 17 May 2013:

The KDU Education Group recently kicked off KDU MY Challenge, an Olympic-inspired talent competition that is open to all secondary schools in the Klang Valley. This inter-school competition is the first of a series of events initiated to celebrate the Group’s 30th Anniversary of providing quality education in Malaysia.

KDU MY Challenge provides a revolutionary platform for all secondary school students in the Klang Valley to develop and showcase their talents in the areas of performing arts, creative design and imaginative expressions. There are six events in this competition: Solo Singing, Band, Modern Dancing, Short Film, Photography and Culinary Arts.

Each participating school sends a contingent of students to take part in up to a maximum of six events. A systematic point system awards points for participation and winners, and the school that accumulates the highest score wins the title of ‘Champion School of the Year 2013’, with a cash prize of RM20,000.

According to Datin Teh Geok Lian, Chief Executive Officer of the KDU Education Group, “The KDU Education Group believes that good education develops a student holistically. KDU MY Challenge is designed to unleash hidden talents and help students realise their full potential. It also helps develop leadership skills and teamwork. It is about complementing the academic curriculum and letting students shine.”

She added that KDU MY Challenge offers students the experience to organise and communicate creatively while being exposed to a larger community that encompasses fellow students from other institutions. “These are innovative opportunities that further nurture students to become confident young adults. And this is reflective of the education methods at the KDU Education Group,” Datin Teh stressed.

Since early April, KDU MY Challenge has embarked on a series of road shows to 100 schools in the Klang Valley to brief schools on the competition.

Specially arranged workshops will be held at the end of May 2013 with selected celebrated figures who are experts in their respective fields, among them celebrity chef Bruce Lim who will preside as one of the judges in the semi-finals and finals of the Culinary Arts event. Local actor Lawrence Wong will also share his experiences in photography and short film making. The workshops are designed to help students hone their skills in these areas, and create a more robust competitive environment.

Auditions, preliminaries and semi-finals will take place at KDU University College (UC), Damansara Jaya campus, in the months of June and July. The grand final of KDU MY Challenge will take place on 25 August this year at the MBPJ Civic Hall.

MY Challenge was first launched in 2011, with KDU University College as the venue host. Following the successful inaugural run two years ago, the KDU Education Group decided to continue with KDU MY Challenge this year, with the support of parent company, Paramount Corporation Berhad, in conjunction with the KDU Education Group’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Registration is open until 24 May 2013. To register, schools are required to email to mychallenge@kdu.edu.my or call Zachary Wong at 012-932 7561.
